Assessment instructions

These assessment instructions are also printed on the assessment form, which is available to download (Word) (PDF).

  • Choose if you want to assess a full colour or greyscale version of the artwork (more detail).
  • Mount the artwork on a wall or a shelf at eye-level.
  • Roll the tape measure out along the floor, so that the metal end is touching the wall. Press the button to lock the tape measure off.
  • If you wore any glasses for the calibration, wear the same ones for this assessment.
  • Determine which particular feature on the artwork you want to assess, e.g. a particular piece of text or graphics.
  • Choose if you want to assess reading, recognising or distinguishing (more detail).
  • Walk backwards and forwards until you find the furthest distance at which you can read/recognise/distinguish this feature quickly and with certainty.
  • Enter the position of your big toe on the tape measure (in cm) in the input box within the Assess your design page. This is your Assessment Distance.
